Dear Recyclers,

Hope everyone is safe and well. Spring is on the way and Earth Day is right around the corner! Here are some updates on some of what’s happening with waste and recycling in Middletown.

The Middletown ONLY Shred Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 24 at Veteran’s Park, from 9am – 11am. Note the change in location from previous years.

The Community Compost Bin and Rain Barrel Sale is happening on line now. Order on line and pick up at Veteran’s Park on Sunday, April 11, between 9am – 11am. A recorded backyard composting presentation with Uconn Master Composters will be available on the City website after March 15.

"Zero Waste Swaps at Home" is an event I am holding with Russell Library on Tuesday, April 20th, 7 – 8pm, online. We will talk about trash, recycling and some of my favorite zero waste ideas I use at home. I’m hoping people can share their ideas of what has worked for them too and we can have an active exchange of ideas. Registration is required. Information is available here: https://russelllibrary.libcal.com/event/7564543.

Don’t miss the WASTED event which is sponsored by the Rockfall Foundation, RiverCOG, Wesleyan Sustainability Office and The City of Middletown. This is a series of Thursday night events that focus on what we can do to address the looming trash disposal crisis. We all create trash, and we all can take actions to solve the problem! We will talk about the trash disposal crisis, environmental justice and trash, where our trash and recycling go, how to do a waste audit, and other simple actions we can take to reduce waste. Each session will be jam- packed with helpful information coming from state and municipal leaders, and trash, recycling, composting and repair experts. The program workshop goes March 18 – May 6, and starts at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday evenings. Information on dates and topics is available here: https://www.rockfallfoundation.org/event/wasted-small-efforts-for-big-change/.

The Regional Household Hazardous Waste events have been scheduled as follows from 9am – 1pm on each of these days:
• Saturday, April 17, Clinton Public Works Garage, 117 Nod Road, Clinton
• Saturday, June 19, Colchester-East Hampton Water Pollution Control Facility, 20 Gildersleeve Drive, East Hampton
• Saturday, August 21, Woodside Intermediate School, 30 Woodside Road, Cromwell
• Saturday, October 9, Middlesex Community College, 100 Training Hill Road, Middletown

The above information is available on the City Recycling events and programs page at: https://www.middletownct.gov/195/Recycling-Events-and-Programs. I’m in the process of updating all of our recycling web pages, but I wanted to get this information out to you asap, as I have gotten many calls.

Please let me know if you have any questions! Stay well and don’t forget, to reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink your waste!

Best,
Kim O’Rourke
Recycling Coordinator
