Second Annual Middletown Middle Passage Ceremony for Commemoration and Racial Justice

Saturday, October 10, 2020

This ceremony, hosted by the Middlesex County Historical Society and several community partners, will commemorate the hundreds of enslaved Africans brought to Middletown beginning in 1661, acknowledge the Wangunk Native American original inhabitants of Middletown, and highlight current racial justice efforts in Middletown. It will be held at the site of the UNESCO Port Marker Site of Memory commemorative plaque, which was dedicated at the first annual ceremony last year. Two hundred enslaved Africans are documented as having arrived in Middletown’s harbor in the 1700s, after surviving the brutal transatlantic trade voyage known as the Middle Passage. Many more arrived in Middletown from the West Indies.
